The Beginner’s Guide to Herb Gardening- 7 Tips to Growing a Successful Indoor Garden
If you’re interested in having an herb garden but don’t have a lot of herb garden “know how”, starting an indoor garden is a wonderful way to learn about growing herbs. You can start small with a few easy to grow herbs and, since they are right in your home, it’s easy to watch them as they grow. And, with following these seven tips, you can be sure that your herbs will thrive and will teach you a lot about what they need to be their best.
1. Choose a few herbs you already like to use in recipes, brew into teas, or to use in potpourri.
2. Purchase a kit that contains these herbs and maybe one or two you don’t know much about. Or, purchase a few seedlings of your favorite herbs and ask an associate where you buy them for assistance in how to get them started.
3. Follow the directions on the kit or from the associate to the letter, and follow up with additional information from the web or a good instructional book.
4. Give the container a half turn if your herbs start growing in one direction. This is their way of telling you they are not getting even light. Or, even better, buy an inexpensive grow light and place it on the side opposite the direction in which the herbs are growing.
5. Mist the leaves of the herbs often with a spray bottle of water, being sure not to get the soil wet. Many herbs like for the top half inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
6. Begin using your herbs as soon as you can tell the new leaves from the older ones. Herbs love to be pruned and will make new leaves in just a few days. Also, if you have flowering herbs that you want to grow more leaves, clip off the flowers as soon as they bud. This will keep them making new leaves for quite a while.
7. Try using a small fan to ventilate the area where the herbs grow. As long as you are vigilant in keeping them misted, the herbs will love the extra breeze and will reward you with more potent, lush foliage.
With these easy steps and a little patience, you will be a successful herb gardener in no time at all! Don’t be afraid to give it a try. There is nothing better than having fresh herbs at your fingertips and impressing your friends with their many uses.
