The argument is compelling and has caught the ears of those who have wide audiences of fans and emulators. Phillip Stein watches have been photographed on the wrists of Madonna, Oprah, Barbara Walters and have even made Today show style editor Judy Gordon’s list of watches to wear. You’ll find them this Christmas in the tony aisles of Bloomingdales, Neiman-Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue department stores. The fall lineup consists of watches in a host of prices ranges and styles, from dual dial diamond-encrusted cocktail watches to rugged weatherproof timepieces that owe more than a nod to the Omega Seamaster line.

Any product making medical claims within the United States is almost guaranteed to become the subject of debate, and the Teslar watches are no exception. International Wristwatch has not hired an independent testing facility to evaluate the Teslar products, but we can report on anecdotal evidence.

Professional athletes are always looking for an edge and were some of the first to adopt the Teslar watch. Several high-profile professional football players from teams like the Miami Dolphins have been reported wearing the watches, as well a few of the Oakland Raiders. Ty Sevin, one of the top javelin throwers in the United States testifies that “I was kind of skeptical” about the power of the watch. He wore it for several weeks and then commented, “I have no doubt about it being able to increase my performance.”

I personally placed one of the Teslar watches on the wrists of my 8-year-old son, Max, and my wife, Candace. During a stroll through Madonna’s Delano Hotel grounds in Miami, Candace remarked that the watch made her feel “like giggling,” and overall she felt “really happy.” Whether the $18 glasses of wine and the sound of flowing water on a moonlit tropical night had anything to do with the comments is hard to say, but she hasn’t taken the watch off in six months and swears by it. Max, on the other hand, swapped his for my oversized Orbita chronometer and hasn’t picked it up since. Then again he’s not a big cell phone, computer, fluorescent lights kind of guy … yet.

It’s hard to imagine that all the radiation we’re exposed to as we become increasingly dependent on technology is not leaving some kind of mark on us. It’s possible that spending the next forty years squinting at a computer monitor will only give you crow’s feet around your eyes. It’s also possible that we’re slowly reengineering our own DNA into who knows what.

Whether the Teslar watch has the power to cancel electromagnetic fields will probably be debated for the next ten years. Needless to say, the products have their evangelists, who are a hell of a lot more outspoken than most other sectors of the watch community. When was the last time you heard someone say, “That Rolex changed my life”?
