Fire lights – not something you want to see anywhere near you home or your fire
When we say fire lights, it could mean lights by our firesides at home, but the real fire lights are those on the fire engines and fire apparatus. The lights on vehicles are what are known as active visual warnings. Without these warning lights, vehicles could not respond quickly and safely.
There is no doubt none of us would want to see any kind of fire fighting vehicle at our home. Sadly, fires happen on an all too regular basis and many of us will need the help of a firefighting vehicle at some time in our lives. The active visual warnings on Fire department vehicles are the fire lights. These could be light bars or beacons and usually a vehicle will have both. The purpose of such fire lights is to provide advance warning to road users that a fire appliance is nearby. Lighting on fire engines can include lightbars and beacons, which act as traffic advisors.
There has been a turn towards using LED fire lights in recent years as they come in low profile units and consume much less energy than any other kind of lighting. The price of LED fire lights at one time would have meant other lighting had to be used. Now the price of LED lights has dropped substantially, which enables the lightbars and beacons used on fire apparatus to be of the brighter more superior LED units. Many fire vehicles have the light bars and the rotating beacon light, both of these serve as hazard warning and help keep fire fighters safe whilst going about their duty.
Any emergency vehicle lighting is used to enable the drivers of emergency vehicles to try to get right of way or act as a warning to other drivers of possible danger or hazards. fire lights are no different and the units fitted to some vehicles will have a small section of board on the light to enable traffic direction advice. Firefighters will be restricted by law and state regarding the use of their vehicle lights and sirens. Often the use of fire lights and sirens are strictly governed and can only be used in response to an emergency call.
fire lights are positioned in prominent places on the vehicles so they can be seen from all angles. The lighting has to be visible from a distance and that is what helps maintain the safety of the personnel inside the vehicle or at a scene. No fire-fighting vehicle would be complete without its fire lights and the siren. There are other distinct marks on fire or indeed any emergency vehicle and these are the words ‘Fire’ or ‘Rescue’ and these are known as passive visual warnings.
We all know what fire fighters look like, and we also have a good idea of what their vehicles look like. Why is it then that sometimes the drivers of such vehicles find it difficult to actually get to where they are needed? That is down to you, and I as users of the roads. We need to keep our level of awareness high and watch out for any flashing fire lights either ahead or in our rear view mirrors. Assisting our fire fighters to get to where they are needed quickly can save lives.
