How to Build a Deck

Have you wondered how to build a deck or a patio that will last the time? Even if you are experienced in building decks, there are so many things which you can do to extend the life of the same. There are small aspects of the process which will help in making it last for a long time to come. All of the aspects which will help you to do so have been accentuated in this article. The first tip to take heed of when you are building a deck is to build as much of it as possible with pressure treated wood. Make sure that all the cut ends are treated with a sealer. This will help maintain the wood for a longer period of time.

Decks can be made of a variety of woods. There are many options like Oakwood, redwood and the like. There are some tips which can help you if you decide on using redwood. Remember to water seal all the corners and sides of redwood before using them for the deck so that the wood has a longer durability. Also, flashing should be done under the joists and the decking boards so that moisture does not harm the wood when it rains. This will prevent the wood from becoming damp and rotting. If you have used major beams then they can be protected by galvanizing or using asphalt emulsion.

When you have finished the deck, remember to paint the entire structure so that it does not rot. It is a less known fact but has been proven that when dry wood comes in contact with dry wood, then the process of rotting accentuates. The footing of the deck should be at a raised platform so that they do not come in contact with the soil which will decay the wood due to the moisture present in it. Also, when the deck is built, remember to make a design so that the water which collects in it due to rains can run off without accumulating. The caulking should be done at the top rather at the bottom so that all the water can drain off and not just the amount at the bottom tier. Though these tips are time-consuming, you will find out that these will help you in maintaining the deck for a longer period of time than ever!
