Types of Colon Surgery available
Colon surgery is usually resorted to remove cancer cells that develop on the colon or rectum lining. There are two types of colon surgery used to treat colon or colorectal or rectal cancer which are open surgery or laparoscopic surgery. Colon surgery usually takes about three hours to perform under general anaesthetic.
Before undergoing colon surgery, the patient has to undergo a few tests to locate the cancerous region. At times, a local excision may be made where cancerous cells are removed from the rectal region to find the extent of cancer. This way, the doctor can decide on the right therapy or colon surgery type to use to treat the patient.
Besides used for treating colon cancer, colon surgery is also used for treating patients suffering from diverticulosis. While diverticulosis may affect any part of the GI tract, it mainly attacks the colon or large intestine. A low fiber diet and medications like corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory drugs lead to increased chances of acquiring diverticulosis.
Open colon surgery
During open colon surgery, a catheter is inserted into the bladder to gauge the patient’s urine output and thus, ascertain the patient drinks sufficient water. The diseases portion of the colon is then located after making an incision in the abdominal region.
After removing the diseased part, the area is sutured or surgically stapled. The exact length of this procedure depends on how much the disease has spread; however on an average, the colon surgery is completed within three hours’ time.
Laparoscopic colon surgery
This is a new and preferred form of colon surgery used because it leads to a faster healing of the colon, so that the patient spend less time in the hospital. There is also less pain after the surgery which is why patients can quickly resume their normal activities. The third advantage of laparoscopic colon surgery is that it leaves less noticeable scars after the surgery.
During laparoscopic colon surgery, the surgeon makes about four small incisions through which a laparoscope is inserted into one of the incisions to view the region. Instruments are then inserted into the other incisions to remove the cancerous growth and affix the open parts of the bowel.
