How To Plan A Major Travel with Kids
We made a promise to our children that when they reached their twelfth birthday, my wife and I would take them anywhere in the world in which you want to go. We called the program “Twelve and travel.” There were several preconditions to travel. The first was that it had to be informed of the election at least 12 months before the date of birth and had to be some justification for it. This arrangement gave us time to organize and plan the trip.
Second, each child had to apply for a passport and know why they needed a passport. We helped with the application process, of course, but the initiative must come from children.
We needed each child to produce at least $ 50 for exchange of the selected country. We were forced to keep the exchange rate published in the New York Times or on the Internet but left the decision as to when to exchange money for each child.
We made a family affair-the itinerary with 12 years at the helm. This meant learning to read maps. During the trip, the 12 year old has to sit in front with a map and guide us according to our travel plan agreement.
The 12 year old boy had to select a theme of travel. In general, this issue developed from the logic required in the first place. For example, the child who chose Scotland and England for his program and identification Twelve of travel literature as a subject. In the planning stage, were identified and highlighted the country of Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy country, territory, Robert Burns and location out in the Hebrides were Robert Louis Stevenson is made some of his writings. In all honesty, the thematic part of the trip was rather superficial, but to visit specific sites associated with the authors identified, and have read a bit of work when we were at the scene.
One child chose Italy for his Twelve and travel. He could not decide on a topic so I created an acronym: ALARM. A = the art, the L =, = An architecture, religion and music R = M =. Therefore, ALARM became our benchmark. We pointed to as a classic piece of art, “What do Answer:? .. Good art and so on and so forth.
The Twelve and the travel program proved a wonderful success, so I offered again as “Sixteen and Travel” program. There has been one of those so far. The 16 year old opted for Vienna, Salzburg and Munich. All conditions of the Twelve and the travel program were certified and began planning. When asked why he made that choice, said he was studying World War II and wanted to see some of the places in her class had discussed.
We agree with that decision and negotiated a further study. We proposed that approached the trip within the period of the 30 and 40 years, but sets us apart from two subjects or themes: How does this period and this part of Europe was “the best” and “worst” of humanity on experience in Western civilization.
Along the way, we speak of Mozart, Freud, Beethoven, Bonfoeffer, the Confessing Church … and talk about Hitler, visited the salt mines, Eagle’s Nest and Dachau. It was a great value in three weeks.
As of this writing, another trip to Italy is preparing. We leave the 24th for two weeks in Tuscany in May. This time it’s a graduation celebration for / with the child who chose England and Scotland for its Twelve and travel.
Of course, anyone can easily see the variations on this theme. Aunts and uncles can open a travel program for nieces and nephews. The choice of travel can be narrower (only the U.S., Canada, Mexico), the child’s age may vary, etc. The important thing is to enjoy living offered by this program. It can mean a whole year of family planning, two or three weeks and years of unforgettable trip to remember once more. Also, perhaps most valuable of all is to introduce young people to other cultures and expose them to a wider world.
