Single Seniors: Is Seniors Dating A Scam?
Everyone wants to find their true soul mate so why should seniors be any exception? Many seniors are in the dating game and are looking for love, friendship, companionship and support. Senior dating sites are a bit of a niche market that is opening up to accommodate senior singles looking for that special someone. And while senior dating sites are enabling seniors to connect with prospective soul mates, they unfortunately are also opening up doors for con artists to contact, deceive and extort the innocent elderly. Regrettably, seniors are major targets for con artists and preying on emotional vulnerability and our deepest drives to receive and give love, makes some seniors susceptible to fraudsters. Some seniors do wonder: is seniors dating a scam or can I truly find someone who loves me?
The anonymity of the internet makes it even more difficult to trust and get to know people and makes it disturbingly easy for illegitimate con artists to pose as genuine daters. Notwithstanding, single seniors can safely date the way other singles do, adhering to a few careful tips:
Avoid writing personal information in profiles and avoid giving out personal information too soon. Use email, which is untraceable, as your first form of contact, or the dating site’s inbox for added security. If giving out a phone number, make sure it is a mobile or unlisted number and give out a landline number only if you are sure the dater is legitimate. When getting to know someone, let things develop slowly. Your gut instincts will tell you if the person you are speaking to is a liar or has ulterior motives.
Remain skeptical and never be too trusting. Do maintain an open mind but if someone asks for information about your bank account, portfolios, wills, investments or inheritance, never answer, and if a person makes requests for money, never comply. Con artists like to rush relationships and often appear needy to try and extort funds. If a person seems to be taking a relationship too fast, or requests money in even an innocent way, it should raise a number of red flags.
Be skeptical of daters who are reluctant to meet you in person and prefer to maintain contact over email. A dater genuinely interested in your character will want to meet in person, when both of you feel comfortable. If the person always insists on initiating the contact and after several months still refuses to give you their contact details, something is wrong.
When meeting someone from a dating site, always arrange to meet in a public place. Never go anywhere alone with any one the first time you meet. Decide on a safe, public venue and always inform someone of where you are going and what time you are expected back.
