Loretta Ford, NP, FAAN, Ed D, is recognized to be the initiator of the nurse practitioner movement; she has been awarded with several awards for her great work. Though she once foresaw the nurse professional practitioner working in all health care delivery settings. In two thousand and three she was honored by the Americans College of professional Nurse Practitioners. This award is given to a health care practitioner, whose life demonstrates outstanding health service to humanity. Loretta Ford horns a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and a Doctorate degree in Education from Colorado University, in addition she is certified nurse in Public health. Dr Loretta Ford is now retired, with eighty six years living in Florida.
Born in New York City, Dr Loretta C. Ford, she received a diploma in nursing in New Brunswick, from the Middlesex General Hospital in nineteen forty two, where she was working as a staff nurse till nineteen forty three when she was commissioned as an officer in the united state, Army Air Force. After end of war Loretta Ford jointed the University of Colorado School Of professional Nursing practitioners (University of Rochester 2009).
Loretta Ford Contribution in the Formulation of New Curriculum for Public Health Nurses:
During the early ninety sixties, in the University of Colorado she and Henry K. Silver a pediatrician were colleagues. Since there was a regional deficiency of family health care pediatricians and physicians impeding healthcare delivery to underserved and rural areas, they found out that innovation was a necessity for solving the problem. In nineteen sixty five Loretta ford and Henry silver were give a small grant from the University of Colorado and formed a demonstration project, aimed at extending the role of the public health nurse in the society. They published their results and formulated an educational curriculum for public health nurse practitioner.
At the University of Colorado the nurse practitioner program, was only offering a certificate for nurses who had a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and with a qualification in family education, child care and preventive care. Loretta Ford together later offered a master’s degree program, and what started as a pediatric area of expertise rapidly extended to broader populations as the necessity grew. Nurse practitioners incorporated the conservative responsibility of the nurse, community outreach and advanced medical training for the reason, to provide education and patient care through a different approach (Vern 1977).
Ford Loretta and Dr Henry Silver transformed the nurse practitioner profession that has made the nurse practitioners to be involved in each aspect of healthcare delivery. It a requirement for all Nurse Practitioners to have a master’s degree and post-masters degrees certificates, in addition advanced nurse and medical training, field certification, and intensive clinical care experience is also are requirement.
