Capitalism refers to economic and social system where the means of production also known as capital is privately controlled, goods, labor capital are traded in a market, profits are either distributed to owners or invested in industries or new technologies and wages are paid to labour.Capitalism is based on free a market. A free market refers to a market where people are free to exchange their goods and services without the intervention of the state. In the wide discussion on capitalism instances like mixed economies come in. This basically refers to capitalism being mixed with statism or central planning. And statism is a word referring to the direct opposite of capitalism. There are some other terms that can be used to refer to capitalism which includes: a free enterprise economy, market liberalism, self regulating market free enterprise economy among others. (Scott & Marshall, 2005)
Thesis statement
It is possible to have harmless capitalism in a free market economy where majority work hard yet only a few benefit
Individuals in one way or the other have to bring out issues that will tender capitalism being harmless. A deep look at a free market will bring out some of the instances where harmless capitalism has been displayed. Take for instance a driver who is driving on the wrong lane to merely avoid a traffic jam. This driver is taking such an action for personal gain, maybe because others may be so honorable to take a similar action. However if such an action is taken by everyone who has the opportunity or temptation, then an effect which is too disastrous would happen. But all in all, such an action is an example of a harmless wrong doing
Even those individuals who were normally not hostile to free markets now holds very high suspicions that capitalism is based on immoral and greed individuals. They hold the perception that the rich are continuing to grow rich at the expense of the poor. Free markets are turning out to be places where the ruthless operators are doing away with the small competitors. The costs of the most essential products and services to human, are rising up high beyond the reach of them that greatly require them. These services and commodities are for example energy and good health care. Capitalism is also still coming along with increased air pollution and obesity. These being a range of social ills affect the entire population. These are not the only suspicions that people have towards capitalism.Pople hold all these suspicions simply because they do not understand what is meant by a free market. They include even those people that are in the business itself. They do not at all understand the whole concept of a free market. They therefore end up putting all the blame on capitalism. (Adam, 2005)
Economic disasters are also blamed on capitalism. These economic disasters are for example the recent mortgage meltdown and the astronomical cost of health insurance.
