Review of National Treasure Film
In case your mind is spinning as a result of all of the crazy codes being deciphered during The Da Vinci Code, you can sit back and loosen up with the signs Nicholas Cage must unravel in order to go on the treasure search in the National Treasure movie. He’s got lots of aid via his father, a very smart female assistant, his tutor, and his wacky but good looking side-kick. The heist scenes involving the stolen Declaration of Independence really are a highlight within the film, all shot on real locations in and around Washington, D.C. as well as Philadelphia, handsomely photographed.
Cage encounters some stiff resistance from Harvey Keitel as a no rubbish FBI person, and some villainous competition from money grubbing Sean Bean and his gang, who want the treasure for monetary reasons only and will stop at nothing, even killing, to lay their greedy hands on it.
The National Treasure movie is all Saturday matinee stuff, the plot strictly an assortment of Indiana Jones as well as other cliffhanger tales where the main character has to chase his vision while all sorts of obstacles are thrust in his way after which the final, climactic shoot out and outrageous pursuit before he is able to walk off along with the girl at the conclusion of the movie.
All of the normal clich?s are firmly in place, but it’s still an enjoyable experience to watch Nicholas Cage interact with an entertaining loving cast. Sean Bean lends a lot of British dignity to his role as the charming bad guy, not quite as dark a villain as is normal in these kinds of capers.
There exists a light touch through all the heist sequences and chases and explorations of the subterranean caverns holding the treasure, as well as some well staged moments of suspense with collapsing stairways and termite ridden wood buildings making the search dangerous. Justin Bartha contributes most of the lighter jibes being a computer wiz who’s clearly having a good time and is aware everything is really a lark as he works on his computer graphics.
Nothing too original here, but National Treasure movie is enjoyable to watch.
