The Little Things About Being a Perfect Parent
We all know that being the perfect parent is a myth that can never really be accomplished, but many of us still try our very best to raise our children to functional, successful people in our society. We struggle with decisions regarding which baby crib bedding sets to purchase all the way to where we should live in order to give our children the best education we can afford. Many people who do not have children will tell new parents that they will be a natural mother or father, but the truth is, there is nothing better than preparation when it comes to raising children. Like almost everything else, effort translates into results. There are thousands of books that are written about how to raise your child the right way, but being the perfect, well-prepared parent doesn’t mean that you have to read them all. Pairing knowledge with your own judgment is usually the best way to mold your child into a functioning individual.
We struggle with many tough decisions when it comes to our children. Should we let them watch television even though we know it will simply rot their brains? Should we let them have a cell phone at age nine because all their friends already had them at age 8? Compromising with your children can be very useful once they reach the age where they want a lot of toys. Setting up a system where work equals reward can be very useful when trying to teach them the value of certain things. Making them take out the trash for a week for the lego star wars minifigures they want will teach them the value of work. Many people say that it’s okay when everything is in moderation. This is a good rule for most things, but there are some situations where it doesn’t apply at all. Perhaps television or ice cream before dinner falls into this category, but having and enforcing strict rules about some things will give them the discipline they need. It can be extremely difficult to say no to your children because you love them so much, but spoiling them will leave them completely unprepared for the real world.
So the next time you are out buying birthday party supplies for your children, think about the message you are sending to them with what you buy. These decisions will shape how your child turns out. Like it or not, you are the most important aspect of their development.
