Physical Education In Children
Risk assessment refers to careful examination of things that can cause harm or injury to the pupils, colleagues or any other person and setting the necessary measures to manage accidents that may result from them thus ensuring that safety is not compromised in achieving the objectives. Therefore physical education teachers need to take necessary precaution measures to prevent or minimize injury in meeting their objectives. Risk assessment involves identifying aspects that require risk assessment and identifying the possible hazards associated with it. The next step is identifying those who are at risk and evaluation of the risk itself. This is followed by putting the findings in record and taking action. This is can be effectively achieved by taking into account effective risk assessment before carrying out any activity or exercise within the classroom setup.
To ensure that safety standards are upheld, the physical education teachers need to be aware of the threats to safety and think of the covers to the risks (New Jersey, Dept. of Public Instruction et. al. 1942). Risk assessment procedures may change with the type of environment because each environment poses different threats to safety. This calls for the physical education teachers to evaluate each environment separately and propose all the possible remedies, for this case the classroom environment.
The classroom environment is not like any other environments, this is because of the limited space and many possible hazards as compared to outdoor environment. Therefore this calls for the teachers responsible to lay down the necessary strategies to ensure that safety is not compromised. This is achieved by having knowledge of risk management principles which involves professional evaluation of the risks involved in a particular environment and the possible remedies. Risk assessment involves taking into account various considerations that ensure safety standards are uphold. For instance, it requires that teachers should have a proper lesson organization and activities fit for classroom setup. Necessary risk control measures should be put in place when entering the hall, during the exercise and when leaving the hall.
Lesson organization involves ensuring that safety exercising principles are emphasized. This is because some exercises are limited to outdoor only and cannot be practiced in classrooms for example overstretching. Proper lesson organization also entails recognizing the suitability of the exercise for the age group involved (Thomas and Lee 2000). This is because a given exercise or activity poses different dangers to different age groups and therefore requiring different preventive measures. Only recognized and approved exercises can be implemented. This is because some practices cannot be executed within the classroom due to limited space. Therefore teachers should carry out activities that utilize the available space and those that require more space restricted to outdoors.
