Recaulking Your Shower To Make It Look Newer

To keep your shower nice and pristine looking, you would be wise to recaulk the connections between your shower, walls, and floors. Caulking is necessary to seal things up and prevent water damage. However, dirt and grime can build up rather quickly on it. It’s very difficult, if not impossible to get it off without removing the caulking. It doesn’t matter how much you clean the rest of your bathroom. It can be immaculate, but if you have dirty and grimey caulking it can completely ruin the entire appearance of your bathroom. So here’s how to recaulk your bathroom.

You’ll want to apply some caulking remover to the old caulking. You can get these from hardware stores such as Home Depot, and large department stores such as Wal-Mar. You’ll have to let it sit for a couple hours so go off and do something else for the time being. You’ll want to remove the softened caulking. Most times it will just fall off, but you may have to peel it off with needle-nose pliers and a putty knife. Pour some paint thinner on a rag, and wipe the area clean.

Next, you’ll need to kill and clear up the mildew. Mix four cups of liquid chlorine bleach, 12 cups of water, and 5 table spoons of powdered laundry detergent. Make sure this mixture does not contain ammonia because bleach and ammonia mixed together will create a harmful gas. Fill a spray bottle with this mixture and spray the joints with it and let it settle for a few minutes. Repeat this process until all the black mildew is gone. Then, spray and wipe the area down with fresh water and a clean rag. Finally, you’ll want to completely dry the area with a hair dryer so that you won’t trap any moisture inside when you apply the new caulking.

To create straight lines with your caulking, place some masking tape about an eighth of an inch along both sides of the joint. Distribute the caulking evenly between the two strips of tape, then smooth it out with a caulking spreader or plastic putty knife. Alternatively, you can use this new product called the Pro Caulk Complete Caulking Kit from the As Seen On TV shop. It comes with smoothing tools that can fit all sorts of joints and corners. After you apply your new caulking, let it dry for several hours, then remove the tape. Now you have a beautiful, fresh looking bathroom.
