Realist View On Terrorism
For ages, terrorists have invaded various parts of the world owing to several reasons; monetary, religious, political and other objective reasons. In response to this many developed nations and some of the developing countries have tried the best to come up with strategies to combat terrorism. A joint venture of these countries has established a phenomenon known as the ‘Global War on Terrorism. However, a myriad of security challenges are coming up as the war against terrorism continues to take its toll.
Firstly, it is rather said than done what it takes for a country to be prepared to join in the war against terrorism. Most developing countries especially in Africa do not want to join in the war against terrorist-related incidences; countries against terrorism receive incessant terrorism threats which are not easy to handle. Unlike developed countries, developing countries have no adequate security systems to combat or prevent terrorism; such countries would be highly susceptible to terrorist attacks if they declared war against terrorism publicly. Developing countries, like the United States of America, do not also have it easy preparing for an attack or a terrorist threat. A lot of unnecessary resources are wasted in terms of operational expenses resulting from security systems and even hiring of security personnel such as the army and the police (University of Michigan, 2001).
Terrorists are far much the most sophisticated people on earth; in the real sense, they create problems before security bodies create the solutions. A terrorist is highly likely to use any weapon that is within his disposal. While security systems major on past experiences for preparedness, terrorists invest in new ways of launching attacks. It is very unfortunate that security bodies get themselves in confusion every time an unpredictable terrorist attack is launched. The 2001 bombing of the Twin Towers substantiates that terrorists are virtually unpredictable (Stein, 2003). No one would have expected use of planes to bring down the World Trade Center; it was quite a strategy. This trait of terrorists being unpredictable in the strategies they use to execute the attacks makes it difficult for security bodies in charge to devise new methods to combat terrorism.
In the war against terrorism, no innocent citizen is ready to lose his/her life in the course of executing this mission. Terrorist have a contrary feeling; most of them do not worry about death since they believe that killing somebody who is not of their religion is an action that is justified even if they die in the process. The overall result is that religion seems to be a major point of conflict between terrorists and those waging a war against them. In the past, the US has been criticized of being biased against Muslims since majority of the perpetrators of this vice belong to this particular religion.
