Need For A Powerful Governing Body
The world at the beginning of 21st century is fundamentally different from what it was only 50 years ago. At the global, national, local and individual levels, dramatic transformations in economic, social and ecological environments have been observed. In my opinion, we need new rules and regulations like global foreign economic policy as well as new global structures apart from UN, WTO, NATO etc. The world is currently seeing many new treats such as digitalization, globalization, terrorism, global warming, etc and has challenges or no solution to controlling them. Technology has brought a new revolution. People are moving from traditional set-up to digitalization. Digitalization has brought up new difficulties and issues like cyber crimes, hacking and terrorism. Many fraudulent cases of hacking into personal bank accounts and illegally withdrawing money were registered recently. Hacking of ATMs were common cases in year 2009. These problems are global problems and do not depend on a particular geographical area. There is no such structure to govern cyber activities internationally and locally. A need exists to create international cyber laws and an organization looking into specifically into cyber crimes globally and addressing various international issues and challenges in the cyber space. Issues like terrorism which has completely disturbed the peace and harmony across the globe are being neglected. Incidents such as 9/11 and India – Mumbai blast are somewhat recent examples of terrorism. Terrorist are now using digital technologies and internet to target attacks. Again, there is no such structure like anti-terrorism governing body to govern terrorism activities and stop them. Terrorism has reached its peak and needs to be controlled immediately.
Globalization refers to various quantitative and qualitative developments ranging from a dramatic increase in international transactions, especially in finance, to the international and spatial reorganization of production, global diffusion of information, value and idea, massive population transfer and the global universal world culture. International governing structures like the World Trade Organization and United Nations infringe on national and individual sovereignty. Globalization is much more than integrating economies but also various culture, technology and governance. Globalization presents a universal challenge – a challenge to each country involved as well as for the institution for global governance. At national levels, there is need of political, economic and socio-cultural forms of regulation. For globalization, each country needs to balance trade policies on its own. Globalization has brought up serious issues such as poverty as a multidimensional phenomenon, inequality, Organizations such as UN and WTO have fewer roles or no role to play in maintaining or designing country specific rules and regulations.
