Spanish Wine Regions

There are many different regions in Spain which are famous for their wine. At the minute production value stands at 33million hectolitres a year. It is an astonishing amount, which makes this country second largest for wine production in the world!!
Here we talk about a few of the regions;
Rioja
Rioja is a wine, with Denominaci?n de Origen Calificada (D.O.C. Qualified designation of origin) named after La Rioja, in Spain. Rioja is made from grapes grown not only in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja, but also in parts of Navarre and the Basque province of ?lava. Rioja is further subdivided into three zones:Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Many wines have traditionally blended fruit from all three regions though there is a slow growth in single zone wines.
Rioja, the region is made up of 123,000 acres of planted vineyards, with a total of 14,000 vineyards. The four main grapes produced here are Tempranillo, Granacha, Graciano and Mazuelo.
Penedes
Penedes is a wine- producing region having a Spanish DO. It is generally seen as one of the country’s best wine-producing regions after the Rioja, it is also one of the most ancient viticulture areas in Europe. Perhaps better-known for its Cava production, a sparkling wine which has had its own DO since 1991, white grape varieties predominate, although the region also produces some highly- regarded, oak-aged reds.
There are several varieties produced in this region, they include Parellada, Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Garnacha, Tempranillo and Merlot.
Navarra
Red variety vines, for production of reds and rosados, represent 95% of all the vines planted in the DO, though this percentage is decreasing as more white varieties are planted. The traditional Garnacha represents 32%, Tempranillo 36%, Cabernet Savignn 13%, Merlot 11% with Mazuelo and Graciano making up the remaining percentage. The main white varieties are Viura, Chardonnay and Garnacha Blanca.
Rueda
This is known mainly as a white wine producing area. The main authorised white varieties are Verdejo, Viura and Savignon Blanc, while the authorised red varieties are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Garnacha. They produce a good Sauvignon Blanc here.
