Giant Tyre Washes Up on Beach

IN the sort of weather we have been enduring recently, anything is likely to wash up on the beach.

And so it was this week at Coolum Beach when lifesavers found a giant tyre.

The large, rust-ridden tyre has left club members guessing whether it fell from the sky or was snatched from the ocean floor by rough seas.

“I saw it there Friday but I don’t know when it washed up,” patrol captain Peter Gardiner said.

“It’s just a mystery from the sea … how long it’s been there, where has it come from?

“It’d be interesting to know how long it’s been drifting around.”

It took two men to move the heavy tyre which is stamped with the identification Goodyear Aircraft Rib.

Mr Gardiner believes recent wild weather may have dislodged it from wherever it was lying off the Coast.

“It’s been modified around the rim,” Mr Gardiner said.

“It’s obviously been used for maybe a marker or something.

“You’d think there’d be a lot of growth on it if it’s too old.”

The surf club has reported the find to authorities but Mr Gardiner hasn’t heard what will become of the mysterious tyre.

Lifesavers have removed the mystery tyre from Coolum Beach and put it into storage until they decide what to do with it.
