Spanish American War
Spanish-American War was held in the year 1898 as a result of a military conflict between the United States and Spain. This war started as a result of Spain refusing to adhere to the demands placed by the United States regarding emancipation of Cuba. Though all Americans suffered the pain of setting Cuba free owing to tension caused by the sinking of the USS Marine, African American soldiers and other black Americans had a harder time than other Americans; they had to overcome many obstacles to be encompassed in the whites’ dominated society. Even before the Spanish war, black soldiers and other black Americans were segregated against; they were not allowed to serve in some specific hotels and salons on allegations that they only hosted white people; the main obstacles they faced were racial discrimination issues.
To continue working for the army, black soldiers had to be fully committed and highly disciplined whether they were discriminated against or not. It was even harder for them to see other African Americans being forced to pay for any ill actions they did. As a result, only individual groups would fight for the rights of blacks and not persons in the army. After sinking of their vessel, black Americans were selected to go to Cuba on the claim that they were more resistant to tropical ailments. They were duped by white men that if they obeyed the commands they were given, in exchange they would be respected and discrimination against them would come to an end; it never did.
Whites pretended to be happy sending four black troops to Florida, Chickamauga Park, Key West and Georgia but in the real sense, they were not happy at the fact that black Americans soldiers sometimes befriended whites and had the capacity to live without racism. The 10th Calvary, which is the troop that arrived last, received open racial remarks from a druggist who refused to sell them soda water; the druggist told them he does not sell ‘black drinks’. When the rough Riders attacked the enemy and some of the soldiers were killed, out of twenty soldiers killed, only one of them was white. For blacks to be acknowledged it cost some of their men; the blacks awarded medals had saved white troops when they were in deep trouble.
In conclusion, during the Spanish-American War, African Americans had to go through a lot of discrimination and to sacrifice a lot to create a more inclusive society; a society where everyone can be accepted regardless of the color of your skin.
