Terminal 3 will also double BCIA’s current retail space, bringing it to slightly over 50,000-square-meters (in excess of 500,000-square-feet)—just about five percent of the total space at the new terminal. Also opening will be new food and beverage outlets spread over almost 15,000-square-meters.It is BCIA’s aim to bring its total retail space per one million passengers to a level comparable to the 1,115-square-meter ratio Singapore Changi and Hong Kong International airports boast.

Like those two,BCIA will host a collection of shops featuring branded fashion and accessories by Bally, Swarovski,Cartier,Aigner, and Dunhill, as well as broad range of cosmetics stores, among them Estée Lauder, Shiseido, L’Occitane, Lancôme, and Biotherm. In February, The China Daily reported the official numbers as being sixty-four restaurants and ninety retail outlets.

At present, retail outlets in Terminal 3 are operated by Sunrise Duty Free and Global & Beijing International Co.(GABICO).GABICO has a long-term retail agreement with franchise rights holder Beijing Capital Airport Commercial Company (ACT) for duty paid travel retail on the domestic front, while Sunrise operates the core duty free concessions in all three of BCIA’s passenger terminals.

In 2007, Sunrise was granted a ten-year concession at Shanghai Pudong Airport, securing its position as China’s premier duty free retailer: Sunrise enjoys the same agreement at Beijing. Among Sunrise’s stable of boutiques and brands are Celine, Salvatore Ferragamo, Ermenegildo Zegna, Shanghai Tang, Omega, and Hermés. Sunrise also retails liquor and tobacc, as well as increasingly popular high-end cosmetics and perfumes at its airport shops.

One of South Korea’s most prominent retailers, with upscale department stores all over the country as well as the mid-range Lotte Mart, Lotte Duty Free began a number of new initiatives in late-2007. Most notable for Lotte Duty Free is the renewal of its contract, for a second term, at Incheon International Airport, South Korea’s primary international gateway. As a result, Lotte has started retailing liquor and tobacc at that location. Until now, the Lotte stores were known largely as a retailer of jewelry, fragrances, cosmetics, food, and clothing; tobacc and liquor was available only at Duty Free Korea.

Lotte’s director for all duty free outlets, Kim Tae Ho, points out that the numbers so far seem to support Lotte’s decision to enter into tobacc and liquor sales, stating (without being specific) that,“there’s been a big jump within that category.” staying in Seoul,Lotte’s main downtown duty free shop at Sogong, just completed an expansion program, adding over 1,000-square-meters of space to the store.Located in Seoul’s central business and hotel district near Gwanghwamun, the project was completed in December 2007. (A second Lotte Duty Free store is located at Jamsil, in the southern Songpa district.)

Though the airport locations are performing as well as the city stores, there is a distinction in what sells best in each location. “Currently at Incheon and Kimhae, meaning at airport shops, liquor and tobacc items are the most popular items, whereas at downtown stores, cosmetics and perfume along with high-end fashion brands, are the most sought “Currently at Incheon and Kimhae airport shops, liquor and tobacc items are the most popular items, whereas at downtown stores, cosmetics and perfume along with high-end fashion brands, are the most sought after categories”
