Electrostatic painting on the surfaces of non conductive materials normally requires a pre coating surface that is ground connected in order for it to discharge ionic charge that is coming from the gun. If this charge on the surface does not flow to the ground it therefore means that quite amount of the paint that is coming from the gun will be rejected. Thus we represent a new painting method which consist of generating atomized water particles that are also electrically charged behind this non conductive surface, that is about to be painted. Therefore the spraying of paint is carried out using a spray gun which has to be maintained at ground level. The water based paint to be used is therefore charged through the influence of the charge that was placed behind the non conductive surface to be painted. Thus as a result the charge on the particles of the water base paint is of an opposite polarity as compared to the charge on the particles of the atomized charged water. This leads to an attraction of the two which in the long end enables the formation of a strong coating on the surface of the object. This new method of painting is environmental friendly, easy, safe and uses less paint.
Electrostatic painting (ESP) is a process, which creates a very smooth finish on metal. It is done through the use of a high pressure spray which saves so much on the labor. This program of electrostatic painting is a very simple process in concept and as well in carrying it out. The process is carried out by placing an electrode that is positively charged on the surface of a metal which look like the cable of a battery, thus when paint is later on sprayed, the negative and the positive charges attracts the paint into metal surface just in the same as a magnet would do. It provides the most durable coating on any surface be it race car frames, aluminum, or patio furniture (Richard, 1977). It is also known as “power coating”, as it use the principle that only opposites that do attract thus creating a durable and uniform finish on the metals without the appearance of drips, runs,, and sags which occur with other liquid paints that are traditional. The best thing with this kind of painting is the fact that it is environmental friendly so you don’t have to worry of polluting the environment as there are no solvents to evaporate and spoil the air or to go down the drain to pollute the waters, and as well its durable when compared to the liquid paints. It was designed to paint railings, ornamental iron or metal items which were once difficult to paint using a roll marker or a brush. The makers of cars once found out that if you charged the particles of paint magnetically, and spray it on the body of your car, then they will be attracted to the metal surface of the car hence producing a uniform coating of paint with a very strong adhesion. it therefore meant that the job of painting would be easier and of a much better quality, as well it will use less paint for covering the surface hence eradicating overspray of paint (William, 1987).
The electrostatic painting system being a high technology kind of painting to particular pieces of work is very efficient. This is through the negatively charged particles of paint and the positively charged grounded piece of work which creates an electrostatic field, where attraction between the opposite charges occurs and thus drawing the particles of paint, into the piece of work that is there, for painting. Thus the electrode which is ionized, which is located at the tip of the paint gun, makes or causes the paint particles to pick up additional electrons hence becoming negatively charged. So, as the coating is been deposited on the piece of work, the charge from the gun tip passes through the ground and goes back to the power supply making the circuit complete(Richard, 1977).
The kind of paint to use for such kind of process, is the paint that is polarized or one that contain polarizable solvents. When using the gun in the spraying process its important to note the health hazards involved as a way of avoiding any possible risks that may come by, this may include; the possibility of danger or fire when a flammable condition is created, or even an explosion, also the voltage may rise up creating the risk of shock. Breathing may also be a problem when operating this gun.
