How To Implement SMART Goal Setting To Crush It In Network Marketing
SMART Goal Setting:
I was initially exposed to the idea of SMART goal setting during an ACE trainer certification course. However, I’m sure that is not the original origin of the concept. I really like it, because it makes setting definite goals a very simple process. I’ve read whole books dedicated to learning how to set goals in your life. This is the beauty of this goal setting method.
S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Attainable
R = Realistic
T = Timely
Alright, let’s break it down. . . .
Specific – Your goal must be specific. You must have a crystal clear picture of what you expect to achieve. Your brain is a picture-book. It’s imperative to be have a goal specific enough to visualize. For example, you have the desired result of becoming worth a million and stop working early from the career you love. Good luck with that. You will never get that because it’s way to ambiguous. This ambiguous idea is the seedling of your specific goal. For this intention to actually happen is must be a crystal-clear mental picture in your head. This vague objective could be specified like this…..I am working at least 10 hrs every week to contrive a network marketing business with company XYZ to reach a goal of at least $10,000 per month$10k/mo in residual benefits. This will let me quit my job by 31DEC2011.
Measurable – Once you have your main goal specified you must break it down into bite-sized measurable chunks. In the previous example your intention was to reach a goal of $10,000 per month via network marketing in about 2 yrs. Adopting SMART goal setting you can then ask “what do I need to do to get there?” Suppose you need to recruit at least 2 distributors in your network marketing business every month to construct a group large enough to produce your desired earnings in 2 yrs. Breaking that down even further let’s say you needed to have 30-40 leads to sponsor two team members. That would equate to sponsoring an average of two leads daily coming into your business. So you must have at least 2 leads per day reach your end destination of financial freedom. Do you see how you start from the large intention and break it up into small, measurable daily action steps? Like the saying goes “inch by inch it’s a cinch!”
Attainable – Let’s face it. Not everyone is physically gifted like Michael Jordan. For me the objective of breaking Mike’s points per game record is absolutely inconceivable. In that same breath I will say that you can do almost anything you put your mind to. SMART goal setting says that you must only set daily objectives that are under your control. Utilizing our representation earlier it would not be desirable to set a desired result that said, “I will get 2 business leads every day no matter what.” This is setting yourself up for collapse. It was a colossal error I made when just starting out in MLM. I concluded that very desired result and then beat myself up when I didn’t realize it every single day. A more suitable desired result would state “I am prospecting at least 5 people every day to procure 32 leads monthly.” This equates to exposing 5 new peeps to my biz each day. Truely the only aspect of this business we have compelete control over is our work ethic. We can’t predict the outcome, but we can do the work and let the law of averages come into play. That’s SMART goal setting.
Realistic – Keep challenging yourself, but you also want to achieve the objectives you decide upon. Set small goals that you know you can reach on the first stages of your journey. With that success your fortitude grows. Once you reach an objective just reset it and expand upon it. Even if your first few desired results seem easy it will get more difficult as you progress. Don’t set colossal desired results right off the bat or again you’ll be setting yourself up for downfall. Fixate on consistent effort and increasing incrementally along the way.
Timely – This is one of the elementary yet most often overlooked parts of intention setting. You must contrive a time-line for the accomplishment of your main desired result along with all of your sub-goals that will get you there. Just remember “someday” never comes. Without a hard time-line you’ll never reach your destination.
I love SMART goal setting – especially in network marketing. It is a very simplistic yet very effective way to set goals for any area of your life. I used SMART goal setting when I first got started marketing online to generate leads. I set my work habit according to how many leads I wanted to generate per day and then got to work.
