Personal Writing Skills
Introduction:
Writing is an art of personal thoughts that ink the paper to express author’s point of view. Writing skills can be classified as artistic and scientific, art of writing refers to author’s idea about the topic and science of writing refers to writing rules like grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and content arrangement. Both are important to be a skilled writer. Arrangement of ideas is most crucial in writing to balance flow of expression and thoughts. Cioffi (2005) asks, “Which several ideas might belong or be discussed together? How can I take these ten ideas (say), all of which I consider important, and classify and arrange them?” (p. 39). However, every writer has his own writing style and skill which identify writer’s thought, his command on the topic and arrangement.
My Writing Scheme:
Outlining:
An excellent piece of writing can not be produced without a strong thought. However, outlining or the main points are also important element of writing scheme. It gives a shorthand representation of the project. As Dillard (1990) also suggests, “When you write, you lay out a line of words” (p. 549)
Introduction Paragraph and Thesis Statement:
Introductory paragraph and thesis statement is first impression. Thesis statement should express the strongest argument in artistic way to keep reader’s attention throughout the treatise. An introductory paragraph must cover synopsis of the project and should hold attractive words.
Body Paragraphs:
Body paragraphs provide support to the main idea of the project. These paragraphs have examples and augments with good reasoning to comprehend the idea of the project. These paragraphs must contain reverse hook and transitional hook between each paragraph. It will provide smooth transition up till the end.
Concluding Paragraph:
Concluding paragraph is last paragraph which leaves the last impression. Concluding paragraph must have conclusive expressions to end the project in memorized manner. This is last chance for a writer to persuade his opinion’s importance to the audience. It should contain a final statement at the end of the project which leads to end the project. It should reward the reader for reading. It “amplifies and enhances the thesis” (Cioffi, 2005, p. 5)
Compare and contrast your process to the steps suggested in the lecture:
The writing steps in lecture and my personal writing steps are same. Moreover, it is same because it refers to science of writing or scholarly defined steps that are in practice generally. However, I confess that writing is an intellectual examination of topic and it should not be dealt in such scientific manner. It should also consider artistic portrayal by a writer.
Identify changes you might make because of your analysis:
First draft should be in artistic manner which only express writer’s thought and should not follow scientific writing patterns. Afterward, adjustment of thoughts in scientific patterns can be more effectual than to carry science and art of writing together.
How is the five-paragraph essay of value to you as a student?
Despite all facts of artistic thought and writing patterns. In fact, five paragraph essay is most concise and scholarly defined pattern of writing an essay. It possess value because of its brief and full coverage of a topic. It is an applied academic practice generally. So, as a student I should value and follow it.
Conclusion:
My writing scheme is demonstration of applied writing patterns. However, literary definition of writing work is expression of personal thoughts with facts and research. So, writer’s intellectual thought is strength of a writing project. Writing scheme would be the same each time, but, the arrangement of ideas, contents, and their smooth transition one to other paragraph is about skills that make the difference.
