Ten Tips for Buying House Plants That Will Survive.
Indoor plants are raised in perfect temperature greenhouses where the air is warm and humid. Once you buy them and bring them home with you, they will likely need to withstand not so comfortable growing conditions as they may have been use too. I have put together my ten top tips to make sure you get the perfect house plants that you will enjoy for many years to come.
1. Strong and vigorous : With a a quick shake. you will soon discover if a plant well rooted. Shaking a plant can also show if any insects like white flies have infested the plant if you see them scatter.
2. Evergreen : Plants should be evergreen so they will always look great.
3. Attractiveness : You may have selected a plant for its beautiful leaves and colors but keep in mind you are looking for a plant with minimum maintenance involved.
4. Slow-growing : Select plants that grow slowly and that don’t need a lot of maintenance. Over a longer period of time they seem to perform better
5. Crowded roots : Check the bottom of the plant for roots coming out of the drainage hole. Roots sticking out of the holes in the pot do not mean the plant is incorrectly potted, but sometimes this is your first clue. Plants with crowded roots will need to soon be transplanting .
6. Unhealthy roots : Roots come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They should not feel squashed, just firm. Squishy roots can be a sign of root rot.
7. Root rot : Signs of root rot can be discovered by smelling the pot or base of the plant, don’t buy this plant if it smells at all rotten.
8. Spots or Discolored leaves, or leaf loss : Spots on leafs are usually a sign of disease or rough use and abuse. A couple yellow leafs are really nothing to worry about. Too many yellow or fallen leaves probably suggest stressed out plant and may not be a good choice to buy.
9. Brown leaf tips and or Leggy plants :These are signs of a plant that has not been properly cared for.
10. Disease or Insects : Check under the leaves where the leaf attaches to the stem this is where most most insects hide. Finding anything should deter you from buying this plant, you will almost certainly have problems with it and you cant take the chance that it may infest the other plants in your home too.
I wish you much happiness with your Indoor gardening.
