What Happened To Cookie Recipes
Cookies are easily made provided if you have the right Cookie Recipes. Depending on where you were brought up, they can also be called to be biscuits. When I was young, I had heard about these cookie things, I asked my mum if she could bake me some cookies and I what I got was biscuits. And that is how I learnt the difference between the two, absolutely no difference at all. Anyway back to biscuits, sorry cookies.
Cookie Recipes go back a long long way and the basic ingredients have not changed much at all. But what has changed is the shapes and adornments. The more modern we become, the more different things become available.
For instance, the first biscuit cookers did not know about hundred and thousands of the recipes, you know the tiny multi coloured balls that sit on top of cakes, and they did not have chocolate chips available either. No sooner than they were invented, they appeared on the top of cookies. Then someone invented icing sugar, so that is a good idea and the cookie makers added some of that on the cookies too. It was only when these items became available that people started to write Cookie Recipes to show the world that there were ways to create a treat, that not only tasted good but looked good as well.
Isn’t it funny how, when you have some thing new and different; the attraction dies away after a while and creates a desire to change it some how, to make it attractive again. This is what happened to biscuits.Shapes changed and we had squares, diamonds, stars, oblongs and any other shape you could think of. They even had them shaped like spades, no not shovels, but the spade that comes on playing cards.
What was tinkered with next was the ingredients. Traditional Cookie Recipes called for flour, sugar, eggs, butter and milk and what did people do to make them more attractive? They changed the taste, firstly by adding vanilla and then other diferent spices and finished up putting chocolate chips not only on the outside but inside as well.
The next thing to go was the name. We don’t call them just plain old cookies or biscuits any more, now we have exotic names like dead bones (from Sicily), Lipardo’s Puta Seco (from the Philipines), caramel-fudge turtle cookies, molasses sugar cookies ll, four spice crackles and to top it off goats feet.
Even the people who cook them have changed . It used to be mum that did the cooking. In the afternoon, when we were at school and when we got home the first thing we did was head for the cookie jar and stay there until the jar was empty. Remember the warnings ‘leave some room for your dinner’. Then the children learnt to bake cookies. This was the time when kids found out how to make money. They would bake their cookies and sell them to neighbours. Later, it was girl scout time with the annual hardtack drive.
What will the next change bring? What will Cookie Recipes call for next? We have seen the the addition of toppings, we’ve seen the shape change, the taste change and the name has changed. It really makes me wonder why they were thought of in the first place.
