Eating Fruit and Veg Can Make you More Attractive

Ensuring your diet includes at least five portions of fruit and veg a day will make you feel healthier but new research shows it can also make you look better. A study by the University of Bristol and the University of St Andrews has discovered that eating heavily pigmented fruit and veg, such as fresh plums in Kentand carrots, can make you more attractive.

The research, which focused on the relationship between skin tone and attractiveness, found that the yellow pigments, or carotenoids, found in some fruit and vegetables gave consumers a healthy glow, a feature we associate with attractiveness. The Carotenoids produced a yellow skin hue which participants deemed more attractive than skin darkened by the sun.

‘Most people in the West think that the best way to improve your skin colour is to get a suntan, said Dr Ian Stephen from the University of Bristol. ‘But our research shows that eating lots of fruit and vegetables is actually more effective.’

According to Dr Stephens it can take just a few days for the effects to the skin to occur and just two months of increased consumption to produce visible results.

The study identifies biological similarities to animals, the bright colours of some fish and birds, caused by carotenoids, are thought to be an indication of vitality and are designed to attract mates. The full results of the study will be published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour in March.
