Introducing Christian Doctrine
In the teachings of Christianity, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God and is the part of trinity which includes God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit present in the God Head. There are different perceptions of Holy Spirit in different books but the teachings of Jesus are the only way to go.
In John’s Gospel it is stated as said by Jesus, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them” (Erickson, 76). This is how Holy Spirit was described by Jesus. He believed in the presence of God everywhere. As stated above, it is quite clear that God as Spirit will remain around all the people and will not leave them when they need Him. The reason for this statement from Jesus was that He wanted to make sure that people who are with Him are not alone. Jesus was also the one that had been baptized with the Holy Spirit in order to fight Satan. At one place He read that, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me” (David, 165). This meant that the Servant Himself agreed that He had the power of Holy Spirit. In another place, it is written in Gospel, according to the God, “I will I will put my spirit upon him” (David, 103).
In Mathew, accounting to Gospel stated that, “Jesus was given the power of Holy Spirit so that He could show the judgment to the Gentiles”. Mathew also emphasized that the miraculous power that were bestowed on Jesus critically made Him to showcase His teachings of God towards His people. He used to heal bruises and injuries with a slight touch of hands and even had the power to make someone alive after being dead. This was not all because Jesus then was able to confront Satan at various occasions and because of His powers He has been able to use those powers to defeat him and let other people know the greatness of God. If a Servant of God can do all this, the power of God who He at some places described as Father, would be far more and made people think of what God was able to do to them.
Jesus at many occasions emphasized on the true nature of the Holy Spirit. Many people mistook as a power that was granted to Him as an honor. Though, there were far greater issues in when it comes to understanding. People perceived Jesus as the God and the concept of Trinity arose. In various places Jesus used the term Son of God for Himself and because of this He was taken as a part of Trinity making Him God as well (Erickson, 45). There are different perceptions in different religions about Jesus being the God, but the interpretations that were made during those times allowed Him to be considered as God. Jesus in terms of Holy Spirit emphasized that this power has been given to Him by God who is the Father of all. By Father He meant the one who is the creator of all the Holy Spirit is the showcasing of that power by Jesus. Jesus never at any place impacted more on the Holy Spirit as it was His ability or He inherited from His Father, the God, but quite relentlessly described it a power given to Him to allow people to understand who He is. Rather He testified in John, “I can of my own self do nothing” subjecting to the fact the Holy Spirit is owned by the God only (Hammond, 187).
