City Workers Remove 404 Tires from Wash

City workers removed hundreds of tires from a drainage wash on Tuesday.

A total of 404 tires were removed from a wash between G and Choiceana Avenues on Tuesday. The area had filled with tires following January’s heavy rains. More tires, many of them partially buried in silt, still remain in the wash, awaiting excavation.

The tires were taken to A-Star Tire and will be recycled after the dirt and sand are removed.

Residents wanting to cut out the middleman can take their unwanted tires to an official Tire Amnesty Day on Sat., Feb. 5, from 7:30 a.m. to noon across the street from Advance Disposal, at 17105 Mesa Street.

“The city is working hard to clean up the marks left behind by the torrential rains,” City Manager Mike Podegracz is quoted as saying in a press release issued Thursday. “We want to encourage residents to take advantage of our Tire Amnesty Days, which will help to prevent natural drainage paths from becoming a catch-all for abandoned tires.”

Hesperia residents can drop-off up to nine passenger car and light truck tires free of charge at the amnesty event.
