Yes, we watch TV, write LCD TV reviews, and thus make money. You might think that this is the best job in the world but our tests run through convoluted processes and then come up with our dough.
Looks: This is a very important factor in any TV. LCD panels are huge and they might be the first thing that people notice when come in to your house. Most TVs have a glossy body but we don’t mind it much. We hate it when mobile phones or any other tiny devices come in glossy exteriors since it attracts finger prints easily. But you don’t touch a TV much so a glossy body’s shine might add to the oomph in your home. Make sure a TV blends well in to your living room. We have seen red bodied panels while writing LCD TV reviews and we are not sure if you’d like that.
Swivel stand: If the stand lets the panel swivel, you get a wider viewing scope. If it doesn’t swivel then you are stuck on the couch in front of the TV. Of course, all this is pointless if you take off the stand and mount the panel on the wall. But if you have wall units, chances are that you won’t make holes in your wall for the TV.
Remote control: Remote control, or the ‘clicker’ as we write in our LCD TV reviews is very important. We have seen brilliant TVs spoilt by awful remotes and then we have seen brilliant remotes serving as a slave to an otherwise below par TV. Remotes may or may not have backlighting but it should be comfortable to hold in the hand. We have also seen remotes which have keys that are easy to tell by feel. You got to have different sizes for different keys for this.
Menu: Menu must be properly laid out. There has to be text explanations for the advanced features or else people who are new to the TV menu feel as confused as a baby in a topless bar. We have seen some menus which highlight the oft-used functions on the menu and hide the features which are rarely used. There are not a lot of menu offerings in terms of entry level TVs but higher end panels have a plethora of menu functions and thus manufacturers need to take good care of it.
