The annular cutter is a cylindrical attachment that is used with a rotary drill. With an annular cutter, on the outside of the cylinder, there are precision-ground flutes that provide efficient chip clearance. Just like the metal hole saw the annular uses a pilot pin to guide the rest of the cutter to precision. It also only cuts a minimal amount of the material as it only cuts the outer perimeter of the hole instead of cutting the entire hole like conventional twist drill bits. The annular cutter also has a tapered inner wall for easy ejection of the slug after the drilling process is completed. When drilling into metal it is good to use synthetic cutting oil as a lubricant. It is important to keep the drill at a perfect upright angle to ensure accuracy. It is also important to maintain constant pressure on the grip of the drill being used because annular cutters can move around on the surface if you are not careful to keep pressure on the device. It is recommended to use an auxiliary handle for your drill and for large holes maybe use two people gripping the drill.
The one drawback that annular cutters have is that they are not successful with concrete. For jobs with concrete it would be best to use a masonry drill bit. Concrete and stone is a completely different material that requires different tools to accomplish the task. For these applications an annular cutter is not your best choice whereas a masonry drill bit will work beautifully.
