About Futon Cotton Beds
Today’s economic conditions which went from bad to worse led many families to sell their homes and belongings. It is disconcerting that most families had to settle for a house whose space is only as big as a bedroom in their previous home. What used to be experienced only by the economically-marginalized sector of a society has not spared the affluent sector even of the richest countries.
Families who find themselves in a small space which is big enough for only the barest minimum pieces of furniture readily learned how to be practical with their purchase choices. When anybody thinks of buying a sofa or a bed, the first thing that comes to his or her mind is futons, the great space-saver.
Futon is the Japanese mattress that is laid flat on the floor and forms part of the traditional set of Japanese bedding. Cotton, wool, or synthetic batting is used as the mattress’ filling.
The lowly Japanese futon has entered into the homes of the Western people and has acquired a new form and yet another function.
The westerners improved on the functionality of the futon and converted it into a sofa or a couch. The western futon is laid flat on a bed frame made of wood or metal. In this form it is used as a bed but, when the frame is folded up, it serves as a couch or a sofa. The futon is a now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t kind of bed in Japan because, at daytime, it is rolled over and stored in the closet when not in use as a bed. In the West, the futon is a piece of furniture which can be found in almost every area of the house.
Since the futon is now being used as a chair more than as a bed, it is now stuffed with sturdier material like foam. The Japanese clean their futons by beating while airing it, but in the other parts of the world, it is the fabric covering that is changed when they get dusty or dirty. Both ways maintain futons free from germs and bacteria that can settle on them. The dual purpose that futons serve make them most popular in homes with little living space.
The mattress always goes with a futon frame in most countries where they are bought as a set. The mattress always stays on the bed frame as in any other bed. Western futons are thicker than their original counterparts but still remain springless although spring-filled mattresses can be purchased if they are the preferred ones. A cotton-stuffed mattress is considered good for one’s health which makes it the easy choice of health-conscious consumers as against mattresses filled with spring or other kinds of filling.
There’s no place or function that futons would not be good for, whether for sleeping in the bedroom, lounging in the living room, sitting at the study table or the sofa-bed function it serves in the guest room.
