Postcard from Portugal

Saludos from Portugal!  We promised to write home, so let me tell you about our southern Portugal paradise!  Right now, I’m sitting at a café in our little beachside resort of Vilamoura. There are all kinds of foreign languages floating around, German, French, and of course, Portuguese.  You will be proud to know that I ordered my “Café com leite” in Portuguese with no problems!

Everything has gone smoothly staying in one of the best Algarve hotels, and being so close to town it makes you feel like you are a part of the local scene.  I picked up this postcard from one of the gorgeous little shops in the marina village, and the beach pictured on the front is just as stunning in real life: white sand for miles, warm water, lot’s of brown bodies in the sun, and heaps to keep us entertained.

Today we are just taking it easy on the beach: It’s too hot for anything else. Tomorrow, we might go horse riding, or dolphin spotting!  All the ideals we imagined of this place are true; it’s got the delicious cuisine, fantastic red wine, and a timeless quality that seems to follow you around, like you can’t tell which century you are living in!

From our Algarve hotel it has been a breeze to explore the area, and already we have been off the beaten track.  You would have loved the Museo Cerro da Vila that we went to yesterday.  It was fascinating, and we got to see some well-preserved Roman Ruins, which provided us a glimpse into the area’s past. There were ancient baths where the mariners used to bathe, and we could just imagine how wonderful it must have been to soak in them in their time.

This place has really exceeded all of our expectations, and after being here just one week, it’s difficult to imagine leaving again.  Perhaps you might like to visit so we can do it all again!  See you soon!
