How to professionally plaster a wall step by step guide
We often look in awe at a plasterer working and delight in the smooth finish left,is it really possible to emulate this polished finish?yes is the answer.Like all other skills the first steps must be learnt first, the rest follows inseparably.
In these examples we will conclude no major prep work is required and the surface is sound but worn and needs a new coat of plaster. Before anything else we want to dig out any crack, this is done by using a scraper and running it deeply into the crack, create a v shape by angling the scraper either side of the crack.Carry this is out for all cracks you see.Next buy some bonding coat plaster,we’ll be using this to fill the cracks properly.Mixed up your bonding coat as per the manufacturerers instructions then fill all your dug out cracks with the made up bonding.Allow to dry over night.
Once dry give your walls a sand down to remove any debris and dust, nothing stick to dust very well so we require a clean surface. The next step is to go out and buy some PVA,,paint roller and paint tray to seal the walls
with.Apply the PVA to the walls being plastered and nothing else,do not thin it down and make sure you put a good even good on across the wall surface. All to dry, preferrably overnight if you are new to plastering. Now we come to the actual application of the plaster. You’ll need a big tub,2 smaller buckets, mixing drill,6″ blade scraper,24 inch blade,a trowel,4-6″ bristle brush and of course access to water,

Ok you have gone out and bought everything you need ,we can begin plasterering.Basing the calculations on an average wall size of 3.6 metres by 2.4 you’ll need just under a bag of plaster per coat.
Most plastering tubs(flexi tubs) are standard sizes this guide is based on the medium sized one.Fill the tub to between a 3rd and half full with water using the 2 smaller buckets as a means of getting the water, now add around half a bag of plaster and start mixing adding plaster until you have a thich creamy texture which holds into the trowel without falling off(beginners mix).Start applying the plaster to the wall working from the bottom to the top, spreading it evenly across the surface.Once done use the 24 ” blade to level the wall off.Wait until the first coat has hardened slightly,if you press with finger it stays indented without being wet.Now mix up a new batch and repeat the first process of applying and levelling off the 2nd coat.No once it has reached the stage it has slightly hardened get your 6″ inch brush and apply some water to the wall by “splashing” it on.Do this across the wall and level off again, allow a little time for the wall to dry further then brush some water on and level of that area with the trowel do this across the wall. Finally ,as the plaster becomes harder lightly go over the wall with just the trowel and no water. If there are any obvious holes fill them with plaster and you’ve just successfully plastered your first wall!
