Taking Out The Pain With Cervical Spine Surgery

Cervical spine surgery will get rid of that pain, that numbness, that tingle which is accompanied by a weakness that even writing is impossible. However, before going further, it is best to know what the surgery is for.

The spine of the mammal is what separates it from the rest of the animal kingdom. The spine of the humans are what separates it from the rest of the mammals, making him more flexible, giving more freedom of movement, and best of all, the ability to turn the neck so that what is behind can be seen. And that ability to turn the neck is made possible by the small bones which attach the head and the neck to the body: the cervical vertebrae. These are the all important set of bones as it not only encases the spinal cord, but if damaged the rest of the body and the brain can just shut down. Still scared of cervical spine surgery? You should be, it is there to save lives, not be ridiculed by unnecessary fears that may derail the treatments to save a life.

The succeeding vertebrae control the areas in the body lower than the cervical. The thoracic from the trunk down, the lumbar from the waist down and the sacral, from the pelvic down. Whatever may cause damage, be it a herniation or arthritis, if the condition worsens to the point where the patient is immobilized then a cervical spine surgery would be called for.

Cervical spine surgery is usually performed when all other alternative treatments have failed and the patient can no longer stand the pain and the pain may even worsen. If for a cervical bulging disc treatment, a cervical spinal fusion can be performed to remove the herniated disc from the cervical spine when the ensuing instability compromises the spine. Here, the fusion of the cervical vertebrae will cause stabilization without the need of the disc. However, sometimes movement can be reduced after this type of procedure.

Some conditions that can call for cervical spine surgery are degenerative disc disease, pinched nerve, traumatic spine injury, herniated disc and spinal arthritis. There are also risks involved in this procedure: spinal cord injury, nerve damage, esophageal injury and a whole lot of other injuries that may affect the neck area. Sometimes, there can be a failed surgery syndrome, infection and blood loss.

Although the risks are there, they are also rare and the importance in the goal of the cervical spine surgery is more important for the patient who will be in constant pain and discomfort if left uncorrected.
