Ancient Mysteries – Part 1

GLASTONBURY TOR, HILL IN ENGLAND

Glastonbury Tor is a conical hill located in Glastonbury, England. It has a 14th century church tower atop it. The hill is rich in legendary and mythical associations, and many believe that the place may have been the venue for some sort of ancient ritual of the Catholics.

Glastonbury Tor finds its place in the list of ancient mysteries of the hills because of the clouds of mystery that shroud it. There have been some sorts of stories and legends that have done the rounds among locals that suggest that the place has some connection to the equally legendary King Arthur.

The Isle of Avalon, which is housed in the church atop the hill, is said to derive its name from a legend of the Celtic folks. There are references to a demi-god who went by the name Avalloc, who was believed to be the ruler of the underground. Avalon, according to Celtic folklore was known to be, an isle of enchantment.

The aspect of Glastonbury Tor that gets the most raised eyebrows is the fact that it has seven levels of terraces. These are built in such a way that they’re encircling the hill. Their construction continues to baffle people who have live in the area. There are no records to prove whether these terraces are man-made or if they are natural formations. There is a belief that they are an ancient maze of sorts and that there is a possibility of them corresponding to a magical diagram.

SILBURY HILL, AVEBURY IN EUROPE

This hill is supposedly the largest prehistoric man-made mound that can be found in the European subcontinent. Dated back to 2660 BC, this mound stands at a staggering height of 130 feet. The mind boggling aspect in question here is that its purpose remains unknown till date.

The best known legend of the Silbury Hill is that it is believed to be the resting place of the King Sil. He was said to be buried on horseback, and this mound is said to be a tribute, of sorts, to him. By the time the 18th century came along, the legend had grown, and people had begun speaking about how the horse and the king were embellished in solid gold.

Yet another legend states that the devil himself was trying to drop soil to cover and bury the people of Marlborough. His plan, however, was foiled by the priests of Avebury. In his desperation, he must have dropped all the soil here and this resulted in the building of the mound.
