American Cars

The first American classic cars manufactured and launched in United States was in the year 1892, a horse buggy powered by single cylinder engine that generated four-horsepower. The car was built and designed by Frank and Charles Duryea and the second car launched by them won the first automobile race in United States, a nine-hour 50-mile marathon from Chicago to Evanston. Ransom Eli Olds developed and launched the three-wheeled steam vehicle in the year 1891, while the gasoline car in 1897. By turn of century, he started manufacturing vehicles in large quantities and he sold more than 2100 cars in 1902 and 5000 vehicles in 1904, when he resigned from Oldsmobile Company to found REO Motor Car Company. Initially the factory-produced practical vehicles were a bit motorized as compared to horse carriages with a compact single cylinder motor underneath the seat driven by chain.

This small vehicle was a bit faster than a horse. Within few years, the automobiles have taken the general configuration we know today which is a multi-cylinder engine in transmission, clutch and front under the floor, shaft drive to live the rear axle, left springs on back wheels, foot operated brakes, gear linkages, steering wheel and pneumatic tires. Before First World War, there were some advanced developments in vehicles such as electric starters, fabric cord tires, shock absorbers, demountable rims, four-wheel brakes, automatic spark advance, all-steel body construction, pressure lubrication in engines and helical gears. There were some other issues as well with American classic cars such as oil was more like molasses and gasoline like kerosene. I have read of classic car reviews, but this review says that one of the most famous models of Ford Motor Company was Model T which was launched during First World War in 1920s.

The 1930s models came with lots of significant improvements in terms of body styling, shortening the hood, fastback lines with skirted fenders and grilled radiators. There are some hybrid models as well in the market which were manufactured and launched during 1980s when both United States and Japan entered in automobile industry. There are some hybrid models of American classic cars which are also known as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) which initially became famous and popular in United States. The American cars became American-Japanese cars because of the low technology and low quality offered by United States manufacturers. There are some classic car reviews which say that once you open any hood of American vehicle, you will mostly find Japanese engines or American engines with Japanese technology.

Classic car reviews also say that most of the American classic cars are powered by gasoline powered engines which are quite big and huge with high-tech and variable valve timing gas engine technologies. There are some Lexus models that generate 350 horsepower out of which 200HP is produced by gasoline engine. Before purchasing an old vehicle you need to check some car reviews to get an idea of different cars.
