Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai is currently in the midst of comprehensive upgrades that were announced in late-2006. India’s busiest international gateway saw over twenty million total passengers travel through it in 2006-07, with that figure expected to jump to twenty-eight million by 2010.

Traditional duty free items have been performing strongly since the beginning of the year, and the traditional locations have also been performing well, particularly when on special promotion.“There are many promotions going on all the time, but I think a high profile one that gets us a lot of attention is the chocolate chef that we have making fresh chocolates in Singapore Terminal 3,” Tuli points out, referring to the new outlet. Typically popular liquors (Absolut 100 a short time ago, fine whiskeys) and perfumes (Chanel, Calvin Klein) continue to perform well with regards to overall sales, something Tuli believes is common across the region.

King Power operates almost 500 retail outlets across Asia, and Tuli sees a bright future for airport shopping in light of expansions at several major regional airports and new terminal openings (such as Changi in Singapore, and Terminal 3 in Beijing). As Tuli succinctly states,“Shopping at airports is on the increase everywhere. Look at the growth in the industry and projections for the future.

Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, and airports in China are showing fantastic figures.” KLIA still performing strongly for Eraman Malaysia Eraman taps increasing LCC traffic with both efficiency and luxury for Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s tenth year alaysia’s largest airport retailer with over forty outlets across the country,Eraman is setting Mitself up for a strong 2008.

With international traffic through Kuala Lumpur increasing and Malaysia becoming a more popular vacation destination, Eraman Malaysia will be introducing new kiosks stores for increased convenience, and is in the midst of finalizing anniversary promotions for Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s anniversary.

Eraman currently operates outlets at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Penang, Kuching (Sarawak), Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), and Labuan Airport, as well as at low cost carrier terminals located at KLIA and Kota Kinabalu. Incorporated in 1993 and operational by 1994, Eraman was the first retailer to introduce high-end branded clothing, cosmetics, leather, and accessories at airport facilities. Eraman—wholly owned by Malaysia Airports Holdings—also manages several food and beverage outlets.

New in Eraman’s stable as of March 2008 are two stores at KLIA. Ashraff Ali, Eraman Malaysia’s head of corporate planning and business development, explains that they are located at the Focal Point area of KLIA’s main terminal. “The stores are a 200-square-meter perfumes and cosmetics store, and a 30-square-meter Tie Rack store. These stores are actually stores relocated to a new area within the building,”Ali states.

Despite the relocation of the clothing and perfume outlets,Ali points out that the items that are maintaining the strongest sales at the airports are exactly the ones that would be expected. “Basically, our best sellers are still the liquor, cigarettes, chocolates and perfumeries product categories, especially liquor and cigarettes. [They] are the top performers due to the high tax structures in Malaysia.”
