The Right Way to Build a Virtual Team
In many ways it’s a great deal easier to get a web business off the ground, today. However, a real business is one that knows how to scale heights and expand. There is really not much to worry or be concerned about if you possess the information that will allow you to truly expand into any market at any time. Those who are just getting under way online are often at a disadvantage for various good reasons. So let’s talk about the idea of a ‘virtual team’ because that is how you can get around a lot of hassles and problems.
When you are talking about assembling your virtual team, you need to teach them your personal vision concerning quality work. It is great to talk to your team, and you should, but take care that you do not waste any time at all on the calls. Recording anything that is important, such as instructions, is really important; of course you can provide them with details in an email. Limit the call time to 60 minutes and don’t exceed that. It will make a difference if you talk to each one for a moment just to maintain good relationships. Later on, things can be discussed further through email. But the focus of your call should be on critical issues that need to be addressed. This is why it makes sense to always prepare the material before the call. You also have to be aware of the time zones of each of the members in your team and set up meetings at a time suitable for everyone. A virtual team, by definition, rarely will be comprised of people who all live in the same time zone, some could be from Asia, some could live on the East Coast and others on the West Coast. Thus, if you want people to be able to attend the meeting, you need to establish it at a time that is appropriate for everyone, which involves you knowing where everyone is from. When you start your own virtual team, you should realize that the people in your team will probably come from the different parts of the globe, and you should respect that.
Finally, you need to develop a vision to make sure your team is delivering results. Unless you reveal your vision to them, they will find it extremely hard to complete all the work you give them. You need for your team to have faith in your goals and your vision. Because everyone is working remotely, it is even more important to ensure everyone gets your vision and is aware of what your expectations and goals are in terms of your business. Your team will then be able to offer up their own ideas and targeted input to improve your vision. A powerful vision will provide ample motivation for them to work towards fulfilling the ultimate goal, because, keep in mind, that people prefer to work for companies that have a vision.
You can set the stage for success by building a strong base with your virtual team. The more you do to contribute to the success of your team will do the same for your business.
