Enjoy the traditional British roast dinner
There are few things in life more quintessentially British than the traditional Sunday roast dinner and whether you have it with friends, family or in a pub, it is something that can really be enjoyed. Whether you take the time to cook and prepare it yourself or enjoy the comfort of having someone else cook your dinner, this meal can easily be the highlight of the week. To make the most of the roast, buying the best quality British meat is the best way to ensure this is one meal you will spend all week looking forward to.
There are no hard and fast rules for making a roast dinner and this means that any of the fine British meats can be used. Pork, beef, chicken or lamb are all perfect meats for this dinner although a variety of game meats may also be used. Basically, whatever meat you and your family prefer is the best meat to use and will ensure that there are very few leftovers at the end of the meal. If there are any leftovers, the meat can be used for sandwich fillings to provide a lunchtime treat at the start of the working week but if the roast goes to plan, there will usually be nothing left by the time everyone has had their fill.
Although using great quality British pork or beef is a great way to start the meal, the quality of vegetables can also have an impact on how the meal goes. Roasted or boiled potatoes are the main vegetable to be used but it is not uncommon to find carrots, turnips, peas, broccoli and parsnips accompanying the fine British meat on the plate. Add in some gravy and a sauce accompaniment and this is virtually all you require to make the most traditional of British meals.
There is no doubt that making a great roast from scratch can take a lot of time and there is the need to do a lot of preparation. It can be difficult to ensure that all of the different components will be ready at the same time but with a bit of planning, it should be manageable. As the British meat will take the longest to cook, it is best to start planning with this cooking time and then working around the rest of the meal. It is also important to ensure that you have enough room to cook because there may be the need to have a lot of different foods cooking at the same time. There is a need for preparation but if it all goes well, every minute of preparation and cooking time has been worth it.
There are many recipes for a good old Sunday dinner so make sure you have all the ingredients to hand by visiting the local food shops.
