Therapeutic horse riding

Horse riding is a great passion for millions of people around the world, whether they compete professionally or ride for leisure. But many people don’t know about the significant health benefits horse riding offers, especially for those with mental and physical disabilities.

A brief history

Therapeutic horse riding is not an entirely new concept. According to Brad and Sherry Steiger’s book “Horse Miracles”, the Ancient Greeks had records of people with disabilities riding horses, and as early as 600 B.C, Orbasis of Lydia wrote about the benefits of horse riding for those who had various mental and physical handicaps.

In 1875 a French physician found that horse riding was helpful in treating various neurological disorders as it improved posture, balance and joint movement. Horse riding also had a number of psychological benefits.

Throughout the 1940s – 1960s, therapeutic riding spread to the rest of the world, with many countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia and various Scandinavian countries setting up community organisations dedicated to bringing therapeutic riding to those that needed it. The therapeutic riding community continues to grow around the world today.

How it works

Horse riding provides exercise by moving the rider’s body, and improves flexibility, circulation, posture and muscle tone. Working with the horses and other riders also benefits the mind and improves self-esteem and self-sufficiency. Working with animals has also been shown to reduce anxiety. The benefits have been well documented for people with disabilities including muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and even hearing problems, to name just a few.

Therapuetic Riding in Australia

There are a number of places that offer therapeutic horse riding across all major cities in Australia. For over 40 years the Australian Riding for the Disabled Association has provided support for those interested in therapeutic riding, and provides contact details of companies that offer the therapy. Many websites also offer info for those who are looking for horses for sale to undergo their own therapy, but it should be remembered that a trained health professional is essential in overseeing any treatment program. Also, horses with a friendly, calm temperament are best, so keep a lookout for warmbloods for sale.
