Wii – the new way to game
When Nintendo brought out their Wii gaming console in 2006, they added a significantly new and different component to the video gaming landscape. Today, the word ‘Wii’ is part of modern vernacular, and has had an impact on who plays video games, what is understood as gaming, and the type of activity that gaming is. Traditionally, video gaming was seen as the domain of young boys – or men who refused to grow up! But Wii has helped change that, making video gaming a fun, interactive and even a physical exercise.
How is the Wii gaming console different?
– Wireless controller. The Wii gaming console differs from others in that it has a wireless remote that is its primary controller. The main difference in this wireless controller is that it has a motion sensing capability, allowing the console to pick up motions and the controller to interact with the game onscreen. The controller recognises gestures and movements. This means that rather than control the actions on screen via buttons, gamers can complete them themselves or with the controller. For example, in Wii fit games, players can play a game of tennis with the controller as their racket, with their motions and shots mimicked onscreen. The Wii console is also very light and highly portable – you can take it with you wherever you go!
– Appeals to a broader demographic. Of all the gaming consoles available, Wii targets a much broader demographic. Advertising it as a ‘new way to game’, the types of game and the gaming experience are designed to appeal to different demographics, such as older age groups and women. To date, it has worked, and has become the bestselling gaming consol with pensioners, grandchildren and all ages in between being users.
– Different types of games. The Wii gaming console is able to appeal to such a wide demographic because of the types of games it offers. From dancing games to karaoke games to a wide variety of fitness and sporting games to trivia, there are games that appeal to the interests of all ages. They are interactive, fun, get family and friends involved and can even be educational!
If you think of video gaming and young boys, dark rooms and lots of fighting and car racing comes to mind, then let the Wii gaming console will change your opinion. Wii offers a way to interact with friends and family in a fun and active way. And, it’s perfect for exercising if you have an aversion to gyms! Once you’ve got the console, you can buy Wii games that suit your interests.
