A solar panel consists of silicon solar cells, metal strips, a junction box, tempered glass, a backing sheet (Tedlar foil), and an aluminum frame.
The raw material in a silicon solar cell is sand. Phosphors or boron are added to raw sand then processed to remove impurities and defects. This enhances the frequencies of light the silicon responds to. When photons of light strike a solar cell they knock electrons free in the silicon crystal forcing them through an electrical circuit.
60 solar cell’s are linked together by soldering metal strips, then sandwiched between the tempered glass, and a backing sheet. From here the aluminum frame is added for stability. The addition of the junction box enables external cables to be connected too what has become the module (solar panel).
You now have a basic understanding of a solar panel, this will help you to understand the main factors that influence the lifespan, yield and quality. The two most important factors are the weather resistance and the soldering between solar cells.
The weather resistance of a panel is generally determined by the quality of the backing sheet. A backing sheet is made up of high grade polymers laminated with special adhesive. For a solar panel to last in excess of 25 years the backing sheet must be able to endure heating and cooling everyday in Australia’s hash sunlight. If a backing sheet fails and enables moisture to enter the panel, safety and yield can be dramatically jeopardized. Testing by Schott solar revealed low quality backing sheets will bubble, crack and or de laminate. Testing to Australian and international standards often fails to recognize this weaknesses. The problem here is these defects will only become apparent after a few years of use. Hundreds of solar panel manufactures have entered the market in the past 10 years(mainly from China).
