The Season For Christmas Lights
The streets are beginning to twinkle and soft Christmas music is beginning to be pumped out on to the sidewalks. These are timeless images. The streets and avenues have been decorated with sparkly lights for hundreds of years and there is no reason to think this might change over the next hundred years.
At first glance it seems as though Christmas lights and Christmas decorations rarely change. We still use the same wreaths, garlands, mistletoe, stars and angels that out grandparents did. We still hang Christmas lighting from the edges of our roof tops. One of the special things about Christmas is the cherished continuity. It always feels the same. However, in reality Christmas lights have undergone a metamorphosis.
Historically, Christmas decorative lighting was cumbersome. It was heavy and fragile which is always a bad combination. Each individual light was hand screwed into the string of lights. One burnt out light bulbs caused havoc. Each bulb had to be individually tested to find the offending bulb. Each year multiple replacement bulbs were required. In short old fashioned strings of Christmas lights were beautiful and joyous but often a big fat hassle.
The technology related to lighting has advanced considerably and accordingly so have Christmas lights. Most modern Christmas lights are made of tiny LED lights. These lights are tiny, light weight, (recently) inexpensive, and very energy efficient. In fact, a recent study out of Germany and reported in the New York Times claims these lights are five times more energy efficient than their predecessors.
These fantastically versatile new LED lights are perfect for creating larger standalone focal pieces such as hanging balls or stars. Historically, a large standalone light sculpture was beyond the budget of most households. These pieces were generally only found amongst the Christmas lighting of huge corporations. However, these pieces are now very affordable and can be found in many department stores.
The time for Christmas lights is upon us. This weekend will be the first weekend of Christmas house parties and therefore a lot of Christmas lighting will go up today. Our houses and communities will start to twinkle as they have for centuries at this time of the year. Christmas lights brighten our spirits and our homes.
