Before you get carried away with the excitement of a new job, there are some practical considerations to make when moving a new, more demanding role, or changing job descriptions completely. Here are some things to get you started and settled in your new job.
Re-assess your position in the company – If you’ve worked hard for this promotion for a long time, you’re likely to already know what the position entails. However, it doesn’t hurt to ask a few extra questions and do some research to understand 100% what is expected of you in your new role. Re-assess your organisational strategies and systems for getting things done, and make sure they’re still efficient and effective.
Manage your relationships – If you’ve moved into a leadership position which means you’ll have to manage people you used to work alongside, it can be difficult learning how to get the balance right between interacting with your colleagues as friends, and maintaining a management role. One suggestion is to set up a meeting with your former colleagues to briefly discuss the change in your role, and what it means. You can still remain friendly and approachable while maintaining a certain amount of professional distance.
Train yourself – You’ve gotten that promotion – now it’s your responsibility to ensure that you’re up to all the challenges that a new job will bring. If you find yourself in a higher leadership position and feel as though you need to update your management skills, executive coaching courses can be a great way to gain more confidence with managing people and delegating tasks to others.
