Day Trips along San Francisco and Beyond

A day trip itinerary in a great city is very much called for to give justice to its charm. Of course, any traveler would want to take in the grandeur of every destination while the sun is still up and shining. However, what if this great city is San Francisco, a peninsula city bounded by natural limitations? How does one get to deal with the calls of a road trip day?

Well, the answer lies not in what feels like a spatial limitation, but on going beyond the boundaries, across wine countries, valleys, luscious green hills, and of course, the beaches in the Pacific. It’s easy really. Once you have crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, you will be transported to a different place not far from home. Living in the city can get cramped up, and just by driving outside the pollution and people, Marin County is right there to welcome you with serene pastoral living in a farm and the fishing village.

Another great day trip destination that wouldn’t take up too much of your time would be to visit Sausalito. This scenic town by the coast can be traveled by car, ferry, or even by biking. This place can serve as a waterfront park with the San Francisco Bay and the city area on its backdrop. What a good way to spend your afternoons alone by the dock or get your creative juices flowing and create the next big hit just like Otis Redding’s “The Dock of the Bay”. You can get home for dinner after an afternoon of soliloquy, or you can book yourself for a short weekend getaway in Fort Baker.

Of course, there’s nothing like driving along Highway1 and passing through the Golden Gate Bridge to bring you to the South and end up at the Golden Gate National Recreational Area. Drive North and Mount Tam and Muir Woods. Go east and hit the coast at Muir Beach and spend some time looking at the Pacific Ocean and its infinite blue waters. Straight up and Bolinas will be your next day trip destination. Bolinas is a charming coastal town full of artsy folks, just right for days when you want to soak up in the sun for some good ‘ol picnic or leisure swimming, and just within an hour drive from the San Francisco city center.

Want to drive further north? Go through the inland section, which cuts your view of the huge Pacific waves, and make your way towards the Point Reyes National Seashore. Point Reyes is separated from the rest of Marin County by a 12 mile coastal estuary that is the Tomales Bay. While you’re at it, grab some ice cold beer and indulge in some fresh-out-of-the-water oysters before heading off back home, or going further up North. If you have the latter as an option, the counties of Sonoma and Mendocino lies ahead and will surely give more great time to lounge around in these laidback beach towns.

Day tripping around San Francisco’s charming adjacent counties and villages will surely tick off that itch to get away from the hustle and bustle of the urban life. Reinvigorate yourself for the next packed schedule by slowly taking in the scenic route away and going back home. You have everything you need for a perfect lazy daytrip around town. Picturesque villages, the deep blue Pacific Ocean view, the trees and all the natural beauties that you don’t get much to see in the city. Load up on the beauty enough to last you for your next time day trip across the Golden Gate.
