Bid “Farewell to the flesh”
February 24, Tuesday- hundreds of millions basked in the festivities worldwide commemorating the last invigorating moments of the Carnival. In a true pagan fashion, food and wine flowed freely in unlimited proportions as people dance and bade “farewell to the flesh.”
Annually, the date when the Carnival ends changes, depending on the date where Easter falls. Of course, it’s easier to get an idea once you have a calendar in hand and know that Easter happens on a Sunday, between late March and late April.
Although countries might have celebrated it in different dates, in a different form of dancing or with how they dressed, Carnival is undeniably a worldwide phenomenon celebrated globally in local ways. Technically, Carnival ascend at its peak in the last week before Lent and culminates on Mardi Gras, which falls on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
For the Lent season, Catholic devotees worldwide commit themselves to forty days of fasting, penance, and prayer. These kind of “cleansing” prepares a Catholic for the most important day in their faith, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. In the ancient times, our forefathers made sure that before they put every indulgence out of their reach, they must make sure that no food or drink should go to waste. Hence, grilling, and cooking and eating are the way to go before Ash Wednesday.
As one might observe, celebrating the end days of the Carnival means flamboyant costumes and enormous amounts of food, wine and music. Different places celebrate Carnival in their own little versions. The Brazilians do a samba while a masquerade ball might happen in Venice or a Zulu parade in New Orleans. Releasing the inner Bacchus through a grand celebration won’t hurt anyone, right? This, after all is the party of parties, where some societies actually prepare for all-year long.
If you get caught up in the celebration while traveling to any of these places during the Carnival season, go along with the flow. Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow you shall fast! Celebrate the Carnival and don’t go to any intellectual how’s and why’s. And oh, passive observing might not be the best way to get into the middle of the festivities. Let go of your inhibitions and participate. You’ll have a lot of stories to tell later on.
