Which isn’t to say that “Sucker Punch” won’t be a wild ride, because we haven’t seen it yet. It’s that the “Art Of” book, for its marginal visual splendor (and, really, we should be more impressed by the sky’s-the-limit pre-production artwork), doesn’t convey anything besides an adolescent obsession with cute girls in thigh-high socks killing monsters with machine guns. And while that’s all well and good, rarely do the images pop to the point of wide-eyed wonderment, without accompanying text to suggest it will be something deeper or more fulfilling. We fear the movie will be as flat as the illustrations in the book.

Set in the 1950s, Sucker Punch follows Babydoll (Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

Sucker Punch is a forthcoming action fantasy film created and also directed by Zack Snyder (known as director of Watchmen and 300). The movie can be explained as Alice in Wonderland together with machine guns. The cast consists of Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm, Oscar Isaac, and Scott Glenn.
