Water coolers are a popular source a fresh drinking water for staff in offices, on building sites, in gyms, schools and public building throughout the UK. Water coolers are most popular in areas of the UK where tap water isn’t a clean and fresh tasting as it could be. Water coolers in London for example are very popular because tap water would normally need to be filtered and softened before drinking. Water coolers carry out this process and cool or heat the water depending on requirements so they are far more effective. It is a requirement to provide drinking water to employees and supplying access to water coolers is often the best way to do it. They are relatively cheap to buy and rent and maintenance costs are fairly low too, especially on plumbed in water coolers where you don’t need to buy water on a weekly/monthly basis. There are also well documented advantages of water coolers in the workplace, hydrated staff work harder and can concentrate better and a water cooler often acts as a focal point for discussion. It’s important that staff communicate about work and just for a general chat as it helps improve employee morale and increase staff cohesion.

How often do water cooler filters need to be replaced?

Water cooler filters can reduce or eliminate bad tastes from water and things like odours, chlorine and organic contaminants that can impair the flavour of drinking water. We recommend using carbon block filters because of their higher performance when compared to gas activated carbon filters (GAC). If you neglect to regularly change your water cooler filters it will result in the flavour being impaired, especially if you live in an area where the water needs to be filtered to be drunk, for example in London, Kent, Bath and Birmingham. We recommend changing your filters every 3 to 6 months depending on usage and water quality. Of course, as soon as you notice a drop in the quality of water from your water cooler it’s probably time to change the filter or investigate what else could be causing the issues water flavour.

Which are best, mains water coolers or bottled water coolers?

We would always recommend using mains water coolers in preference to bottled water coolers. Mains water coolers are more eco-friendly because once plumbed in you have an unlimited supply of water and can avoid the carbon footprint of water cooler bottles and the transportation water from source to cooler. Over the long term mains water coolers are also much cheaper than bottled water coolers so it’s a win win situation. There are situations where mains water coolers aren’t appropriate, for example when the nearest source of plumbed water is more than 50 metres away or when the cooler is required at a temporary site. It’s not worth plumbing in a water cooler for only a few days use as there isn’t enough time to recoup the costs on the water cooler and installation to make it a cheaper option than bottled water coolers.
