Hawaii Plastic Surgeons Often Perform Breast Augmentation, Reconstructions, Liposuction
Hawaii plastic surgeons will be experienced in cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation and reconstruction, and tummy tucks (abdominoplasty). Breast augmentation is the most commonly performed cosmetic operation.
The use of breast implants for cosmetic reasons is referred to as augmentation. The term breast reconstruction is used for non-cosmetic operations, which include cases where breast tissue has been lost (e. G. Mastectomy in breast cancer cases), or where a medical abnormality stops normal breast development.
Both saline and silicone gel implants are used in the US. One disadvantage with saline is that rippling/wrinkling may occur on the implant surface, which can be visible in patients with little breast tissue.
Saline implants do however have the advantage that they are empty when they are implanted into the patient’s breasts, after which they are filled with the sterile saline solution. A smaller incision is required to insert a saline implant, compared to a silicone implant. The small incision can sometimes be periareolar (around the areola). Depending on the individual’s areola pigmentation, there may be less visible scarring than an inframammary fold incision (infra-mammary = below the breast).
Infra-mammary incision is more likely for silicone implants. These may also suffer from a complication known as silent rupture, and the patient most have MRI monitoring after the procedure. The need for the MRI monitoring restricts silicone gel implants to patients of over 22 years of age for augmentation (FDA rules). The 22 years old rule does not apply to reconstruction.
Most augmentation procedures in the United States will place the implant in the subpectoral position. The pectoralis major is the main muscle in the chest (the pecs for body builders). Placing the implant partly beneath the pectoralis major helps cover the implant, which conceals any rippling and wrinkling of the implant itself, and helps restrict movement of the implant. For breast reconstruction the slightly different submuscular implant position may be preferred.
