Investing in a car is usually a thrilling experience in any person’s life. No matter if you have just finished high school and are surprised with a small vehicle to start your college or university years with or if you are a thriving business man trading in your current set of tires for something a bit more luxurious, the experience remains enjoyable!
If you are considering purchasing a car, there are a number of things you need to think about:
What is your financial budget? Although we all secretly want to drive very fancy sports cars with sunroofs and fancy tracking devices, the truth is that the average man on the street will not necessarily ever have the privilege of owning such a luxury! Be realistic when shopping around for a car – bear in mind you also need to plan for expenses such as gas and insurance, and that the actual monthly installment won’t be the only thing to cope with.
What do you want to use the car for? Students that are just looking for 4 wheels and a steering wheel to get to their classes will usually start with a very basic and inexpensive vehicle, especially if they need to pay it off themselves! A family of four might be a bit inconvenienced in a 2 door sedan, especially if you add a baby with a car seat to the equation. And a businessman that spends a lot of time in the road will certainly need to buy something a bit more comfy, perhaps with power-steering and air-con.
Think about your way of life. Are you a city slicker or a farm boy? Do you like to go on outings to rugged destinations or is your idea of a wonderful outing a trip to the nearest mall? If you often need to move larger items or simply enjoy going camping out or exploring the unknown, a little sports vehicle would probably not be the best choice. Conversely, if you only use your vehicle to take your pup to the parlour, a tough 4×4 or bakkie would be overkill.
Extras are not always a good idea. Lots of people spend ridiculous amounts on proper sound systems for their car. It is important to keep in mind that this does not really increase the value of your car. If you are trying to sell your motor vehicle, a buyer would not always be interested in spending a lot of money more on your car, just for the fancy sound system. This does not mean that you should not customize your vehicle to match your style and likes, but do not anticipate that you will receive as much back as what you invest in the vehicle.
Before you start looking for your next car, do a bit of research. Determine whether you’re looking for a vehicle with air-con and power-steering, two seats or four, a sedan or a SUV etc. Cars cost a lot of money – make sure that you take the vehicle for a proper test drive before you make a final decision.
