Super Soaker – A Short History

Water is said to be an essential part of life because of it cleansing prowess. But who would have thought that the thing that is ordinarily used to clench thirst and to cleanse both the inside and outside of a human body, can be a source of a fun-filled experience? On November 13, 1989, Dr. Lonnie Johnson has with his invention of the Super Soaker.

Super Soaker is a brand name of toy water gun originally known as “Power Drencher.” It was in 1989 when the whole new age of water weaponry began. The idea behind it already started as early as 1982, though. Dr. Lonnie Johnson, who was a spacecraft systems engineer on Galileo mission to Jupiter at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, obtained the idea in his work while heating pump using water to go up against freon. Having hooked the model up of the pump to the sink of his lavatory, he found himself shooting powerful steam of water from it across his bathroom. It was then when he thought to himself that it’s going to make a great water gun.

The first Super Soakers made use of manually pressurized air resulting to a blaster that forces water out of the nozzle and into the air with greater power, speed, and accuracy than the other common squirt guns in the market. Power Drencher was eventually renamed as Super Soaker along with a series of television advertisements. With its rebranding in 1991, several improvement and modification was made to develop the water blaster technology.

Over the years, Super Soaker has evolved and has gone through a variety of models, all for the intention of developing the product. The original Super Soaker was called Power Drencher, or the SS. Even at its infancy, it was able to outshine the conventional water guns already in the market. The arrival of the XP (eXtra Power) models of Super Soaker yielded its customers a more durable version of water gun. XXP or eXtra eXtra Power was a part of the XP line with two double-barreled models. In 1996, the most powerful model range of Super Soaker, called CPS or Constant Pressure System was introduced, was introduced. It was said to be more powerful than the XP 70 by twenty folds. SC or Super charger is another Super Soaker range introduced in 1999 which enables speedy pressurization through a garden hose. Super Soaker even hit the Guiness Book of World Records with its model range, Monster, introduced in 2000, as the largest water gun ever produced. To maximize flow, in 2002, the Max-D or Maximum Distance line included ball valve for its trigger as part of its innovation. In 2003, an unpopular line called EES or Enhanced Electronic Soakage which had sound effects was introduced. Soaker Tag, a considered underpowered Super Soaker was launched in 2004. Max Infusion was launched in 2006 which allows filling using hose without removing cap. Aqua Shock, Bottle Shot and Quick Blast came next.

For its 20th Anniversary, rendition has become a fad with its release of redesigned versions of past Super Soaker.
